Motocross Jersey and Pant Fabrics Explained

Motocross gear takes more punishment than almost any other sportswear. Riders deal with heat, mud, roost, crashes and hours in the saddle, so the fabrics in a jersey and pants matter as much as the design. This guide explains the main fabrics used in custom motocross jerseys and pants, and what each one does.

What a motocross jersey needs to do

A good MX jersey must keep the rider cool, move freely with arms and shoulders, fit over body armor and chest protection, and survive the occasional slide across the track. It also needs to take bright, detailed sublimated graphics, because jerseys carry team designs, sponsor logos, names and numbers.

Motocross jersey fabrics

Adidas mesh

A durable, breathable performance mesh that is widely used for the main body of motocross jerseys. It has a clean surface that takes sublimation well, so colors and sponsor logos come out sharp.

Butterfly mesh

A lightweight mesh with a fine, open structure that lets air move through the jersey. It is popular for riders who race in hot conditions and want maximum comfort.

Oval mesh panels

Oval mesh has larger openings and is used as ventilation panels in high-heat areas, such as under the arms and along the sides. Combining a main body fabric with oval mesh panels gives riders extra airflow exactly where they need it.

What motocross pants need to do

MX pants have a different job. They must resist abrasion from the bike and the track, flex at the knees and hips as the rider moves on the bike, and stay comfortable over knee braces and guards.

Motocross pant fabrics

NS Lycra

A stretch fabric used as a main material in motocross pants. It gives the flexibility riders need to move freely on the bike.

Cordura

A tough, abrasion-resistant fabric used as reinforcement in high-wear areas. Cordura helps motocross pants last longer when they rub against the bike or the ground.

Stretch fabrics and mesh stretch panels

Stretch panels at key points, such as the knees, seat and back of the waist, let the pants move with the rider. Mesh stretch panels add flexibility and ventilation at the same time.

Why sublimation is used on motocross gear

Almost all modern motocross jerseys and many pants are sublimated. The ink bonds into the fabric, so the design will not crack or peel when the gear is stretched, washed or scraped, and there is no limit to the number of colors. That is why race teams can carry complex graphics and many sponsor logos on their gear.

Choosing fabrics for your custom MX gear

  • Racing in hot weather? Prioritize lightweight jersey mesh and ventilation panels.
  • Riding rough tracks or enduro? Ask for Cordura reinforcement on your pants.
  • Ordering for a team? Keep the same fabrics across all riders for a consistent look.
  • Building a brand? Order a sample first to check the fabric, fit and print quality.
